This summer has been a summer of growth for Dan and I. Woo-hoo!
We SURVIVED living together and actually LIKED it.
Usually all I hear are horror stories (although I know there are tons of people who do make it work and love it as well) of couples cohabiting but somehow, Dan and I made it tolerable and even something we looked forward to. If this was a lie, I’d tell you because I’m forced to move out for internship on Friday. We were lucky because we had a trial cohabiting period with no commitment. So, if at the end of our trial period we wanted to cut our heads off and burn them in the streets, we could just break up and not be forced to live together under a lease or something. Ya know?
So without further ado, here are some random tid-bits of my summer living with my scruffy-faced boyfriend:

Oh, shit, let me get a better picture…

That’s better. A little more clean-shaven (I like ‘em scruffilicious!)
- He makes me laugh. Last night we had an all-out laughing session complete with me taking my pillow and smacking him so hard. Then he tickled me and we fought like rats. (Have you ever seen rats box? It’s kinda hilarious.)
- Dan tells me if I do something funny in the middle of the night. For example, the other day apparently I woke up wide-eyed in the middle of the night pointing towards my dresser saying, “Look at the head bands! They are FLYING.” Then I guess I got a little ticked at him for not seeing the flying head bands as CLEARLY as I saw them.
- Even though I can’t stand it sometimes, I’m finally getting used to the Pillow Barrier. In fact, Dan has even attempted to fix the issue by cuddling hardcore before bed. That typically doesn’t work because I wake up with a pillow hugging me ever to tenderly and a boyfriend half-naked on the bed because I stole all the covers in a fit of half-asleep rage.
- When I ask Dan to do something… he DOES IT. Oh and get this: When he asks ME to do something… I DO IT! We don’t argue about stupid things. If I want him to pick up his dirty laundry, he just says, “Sure.” I remember the first time I asked him to do something. I was waiting with fury for his response because I JUST KNEW it would be bad. He completely caught me off guard and just said, “Sure.” After that I had to go for a run to let out all the pent up energy I had reserved for our potential fight.
- Simply this: Our morning kisses. If I leave first, I kiss him. If he leaves first, he kisses me. Simple, sweet, and the best way to start off a day.
- He is so utterly random. Recently, in the middle of the night he said that he couldn’t sleep. I asked him what he was thinking about. His response was, “The Hangover, school, woodchucks, and hats.”
Obviously, most of my memories involve the night time because that’s when we see each other most. I love the fact that at the end of the day, I get to see him and goof around while watching Conan before bed. He makes my day easier and my night better knowing he’s next to me.
Recently, I talked to my mom and told her I was sad about moving away from Dan. I’ve teared up at least once a day this week. Her response was, “Well Julie, isn’t it better that you’ve had a wonderful summer instead of a terrible one?” She is right. I need to be thankful for what we have shared and not dwell negatively on what’s to come.
So, as we cross into the next stage of our relationship, I am looking forward to it. I can’t wait to drive back to DC to visit him and the anticipation that lies ahead. Our relationship will only get better from here even if it is long distance.

Cohabiting can be fun. I think it’s a great way to find out if you’re a good match or not with someone. you don’t really know someone until you live with them. Glad it was a good experience for you

Aw, I’m so happy to read this wonderful verdict. And I think your summer sounds like it was pretty effing awesome. And ps…burning each others’ heads in the streets left me with the most hilarious image in my head. Ahh, I love it. Here’s to hoping it won’t be too long before you have more time co-habitating!

It’s great that you got the trial run.
Hubs and I did that before we went into a lease together and we learned A LOT about each other.
Yay for a great summer!

Julie! I’m so so happy that the summer was so wonderful for you. I’m glad that you and Dan had a great time together. You guys remind me of Mr. Potts – we always have fun together & share a lot of laughs.

I’m glad it worked out for you guys! We love living together too. It’s funny, because I thought when we got into a bigger place we would seperate to watch TV because we now have two…but, we both still prefer to just suck it up and watch what the other person wants (we share the remote, obvi) instead of being in different rooms. Yay!

you guys are too cute. i think the fact that you listen to each other and do things when asked (nicely, of course) speaks volumes. most people, um…. don’t. and then they bite each others heads off.

My husband and I lived together for 2 years before we got married, and I think it was the best thing we could have done. I am happy that things have worked out for you. I love the cute stories you mentioned above. I am going to share some of your little secrest with my hubby to spice things up (the kissing in the am). Sometimes we get to caught up in our busy lives to remember to do those kinds of things.

im dying about the “saying stuff in the middle of the night” .. my ex-boyfriend told me that once i woke up in the middle of the night and looked him square in the eyes and said: “NEWBORNS”. and when he asked me what i was talking about, I got very annoyed that he had no idea.

Aww. What a cute couple you two are! I feel you though. I hated the times we were apart in high school and college summers & holidays. Long distance sucked but I loved the tingly exciting feeling we got every time we saw each other again. It made our relationship stronger which is a wonderful thing! Everything happens for a reason.

I am so glad you had such a good experience! We’ve been living together for over two years and it was the best decision for our relationship and great preparation for our marriage. Plus, it is a whole lot of fun to have your best friend around all the time.
