New girl in town and blogfest

It’s hard being the new girl in town. Even though I’ve been here for about three months now, I still feel very new and alone. It’s even tougher since I’m not taking classes and just focusing on my internship. Therefore, I don’t incidentally meet friends my own age and forced to talk to them. Even though I’m pretty outgoing, I find it difficult to make friends. Sometimes, I feel like Carrie Bradshaw when she’s in Paris and looks through the restaurant window and sees a group of girl friends laughing.

Last night, I was sitting on my couch in self-pity wishing I hadn’t moved here. I tried to make plans but they fell through. So, there I sat loathing in self-doubt that I would never make friends in this city. Last night was an event called “Pittsburgh Light Up Night” and I remember going when I was really young (remember, I lived in Pittsburgh until I was 13). It’s an event where they light the Christmas tree and decorate Pittsburgh with lights and events. I wanted to go so badly or at least do something, but instead, I sat there. On the phone, Dan told me to just go by myself. Well, maybe other people can do that easily, but I can’t. There was also another event happening last night. Something called Blogfest for Pittsburgh social media people. I “heard” about it on Twitter but, again, I felt too much like a lame-ass to get off the couch and go alone. Other Pittsburgh bloggers that I’d met so far were all busy or working late. I kept watching tweets go back and forth about people meeting up. Then, Andy told me to go and even Direct Messaged me his phone number. It’s people like that that make the world go round, in my opinion. With that, I got off the couch, showered, and found my way to Finnegan’s Wake.

I had a great time. I met a ton of bloggers and tweeple who I know I’ll be connecting with on a daily basis. Pittsburgher’s are so much fun and unique. They each bring something different to the table.

Thank you, Pittsburgh bloggers, for getting my ass of my couch last night and showing me a good time! Can’t wait for our next meet-up!

hugs,

Julie

I am SO glad you had a fun night after plans fell through – it sucks that they fell through, but look at you making the best of it :-)

Hooray for BlogFest helping pull you from your doldrums — but a much bigger Hooray for you for getting yourself there and mingling with people you hadn’t yet met!

And three cheers to Andy as well for his friendly encouragement. Sounds like a perfect Pittsburgh night.

Hope to see you again soon.

Good for you! I remember when I first moved to my current town a year ago- I hated it and felt super lonely. I had to force myself to go to Target down the road just to get out and do something. It’s amazing though how twitter and blogging can bring people together! Wish I had that a year ago!

I’m so glad you got out last night and had fun. It’s hard, I know. Sometimes I just want to be alone and stay in but I know I should get out and meet people.

That is so awesome! Way to go in getting out there. I can’t imagine being new to a town and not knowing a lot of people.
Really, that is awesome!
Have a good rest of the weekend!

I feel awful for not being around when you needed someone to hang with. Ugh. I’m sorry. I probably would’ve had A LOT more fun with you…trust me. Let me know if there’s another Friday night you wanna hang out. I will be there!

Oh good, I’m glad you went! Maybe next year you can go with some of your new friends to Light Up Night. I only went 1 year out of the 4 that I was there for college, but I LOVED it. :)
