Panera fail and cottage cheese

Today during work, I was so motivated to run outside for 30 minutes. Then, I would go to Panera (one of my favorite places because they have actual FOOD rather than just pastries). However, today just didn’t pan out exactly how I wanted it.

Example 1: It was absolutely beautiful out ALL morning. It was a tad windy, but the temperature was a little higher than yesterday plus the sun was out. But then my school decided to have a fire drill which consisted of us standing outside while it was super windy and cold. Luckily, my awesome co-worker gave me her huge winter coat to wear.

Let’s fast forward about 30 minutes later: Ding, ding, ding.. what?! Another fire drill?! Did we not do it right the first time? This time it was pouring down rain and thundering. It was also so damn cold out and I didn’t have a coat. It was also a day I decided it would be a good idea to wear a lower neckline. I was FREEZING. We stood out there for about 10-minutes (which is long if you’re cold). For those 10-minutes, I think I became closer than ever with some co-workers who I barely talk to because we were huddling so close to each other! Finally, we were able to go inside. And then, GUESS WHAT? It was sunny and beautiful again. I swear, the weather today really messed with me.

Example 2: I get home and stupidly decided to lie down for a few minutes before I go to the gym (I was not running outside with the unpredictable weather!).

…Two hours later, I woke up and it was dark outside. Oops. I was not going to let a stupid nap stop me though! Off to the gym I went.

Example 3: I forgot to mention that earlier in the day, I bought some amazing white chocolate peppermint bark from our holiday store (the kids made it!). I almost ate all of it during the day. Let me tell you, peppermint bark, no matter how yummy, delicious and colorful, is NOT the perfect pre-running snack. Ick! So, at the gym, I kinda felt like crap. I ran for 5 minutes. Then walked on a 4.0 incline at a fast pace for 10 minutes. Then, I ran for another 5 minutes. Obviously, I didn’t hit my 30 minute goal – even though I have been for the past few weeks with no trouble. Then, I tried to do sit-ups and by that point I was just over the gym.

Example 4: I love Panera so I was super excited to visit for dinner and to write a quick paper. I went to my go-to location (it was around 7 pm), and no one was there. It was closed for some reason (power outage maybe?). Gah! By this point, I was craving their french onion soup so badly that I drove another 15 minutes to a different location. Crazy? Yes. By this point, it was around 7:30 and they close at 9. Obviously not enough time to focus on a paper but I tried anyways.

Example 5: When I opened my computer, I realized that it was on low battery. I looked around everywhere for an outlet and there was none to be seen. Luckily, there was one across the room at a different table. How annoying! I shouldn’t have to move to a different table to plug in my damn laptop. Panera FAIL.

**********

Lalala, so here I am. Back at my place with a still incomplete paper. I’ll finish it at some point! Now, let’s talk about cottage cheese, shall we? Recently, my new trainer recommended I eat protein with every meal. I would have to agree except for breakfast. Every morning, it’s hard enough getting in a healthy meal quickly! Adding eggs or another protein would be difficult (any other ideas, people?). When he suggested cottage cheese, I literally made a face.

Cottage cheese and I were best friends growing up. I had it all the time (along with apples – which I don’t like now). Then I randomly decided I didn’t like it and haven’t eaten it since. However, with his recommendation and my determination to LIKE cottage cheese, I decided to give it another whirl, especially since it has about 13 grams of protein per serving!

So, I posed this question on Twitter:

I got a TON of excellent suggestions! However, since I’m broke as a joke I only tried two ideas for the time being. The first one was from Just Kerry. Her idea was to add cut up tomato, salt, and pepper to taste. I tried it and loved it! I’m obsessed with fresh tomatoes and love salty food so this was perfect!

Cristina and Shaina both suggested adding jam into the mix. Conveniently, I had some reduced-sugar jam in my fridge already. This morning, I tried that. Honestly, it needed something else. Others suggested honey, vanilla extract, sugar, etc so I’ll add those too plus maybe a cut up banana. By just adding jam, it also makes the serving a little too small. I think by adding a banana, it should bulk it up more.

Anywho, I hope you are having a lovely week. I can’t believe it’s almost the weekend! This time next week, I’ll be in DC with Dan. I’m so excited to see him for 2 and a half weeks! Plus all the traveling (Hellooo, St. Louis!). Tomorrow, I’m a tad nervous because my personal trainer told me it will be a hard workout on my legs. I hope not too hard because I want to get in a good run this weekend in Ohio (I’m visiting my family this weekend).

Well, that’s all I got for today!

xx,

Julie

I LOVE cinnamon but am trying to get away from splenda so maybe I’ll add some honey or real sugar. Thanks for the tip! I need to pick up some cinnamon on my next grocery outing.

Pepper and tomatoes in cottage cheese sounds really good! I have tried it with pepper, but never tomatoes too!!

Mmmm definitely try it! Also, I’m thinking about adding cucumber too. Ooo the possibilities! :-)

Oh gosh, I hope you have a better day tomorrow. Why would a Panera be closed? How frustrating!

I myself enjoy my cottage cheese straight up, no extras. I am NOT a jelly person so I guess that’s out.. but I’m SO curious about tomatoes and cottage cheese – that sounds kinda yummy!

Hope the trainer doesn’t kick your butt TOO hard today!

I’m not sure I can eat it straight up anymore. I did when I was younger but now, not so much :-) Definitely try it! It’s soooo good (if you love tomatoes!). Haha I kinda hope he does… it will suck during the training but afterward I’m sure I’ll feel great… or… hurt. Badly :-) xoxo

That cottage cheese and tomato looks great! I have never tried cottage cheese with anything other than pineapple, but I’ll definitely try that soon. And I had no idea cottage cheese was a protein. I’m now amping my diet up with it since protein and I don’t get along as I’m a fake vegetarian.

I had never thought of fresh tomatoes…that sounds soooo good! Try it with cut up fruit, like strawberries, instead of jam maybe? I’ve never actually mixed it with jam myself…I’ve just bought those single serving cottage cheese thingies with fruit in them at the store. Because I am clearly too lazy to PUT THE TWO TOGETHER ON MY OWN. :)

You have convinced me…I need to start eating cottage cheese more regularly. It’s on the grocery list!

Haha yay! I need to try your suggestion about the already made kind. When I shopped yesterday, I was at a gas station of all places. They had a nice selection of “grocery” store food though but not the cottage cheese with the fruit. When I go to the real store, I’ll pick some up!

So glad you liked the tomato with your cottage cheese! I like it with the tomato because it bulks up the serving size and really make a meal out of it. I will also scoop it on to celery (with salt & pepper) and that’s good too. Hmmm… makes me want to run out and buy some!

Ooo that’s such a good idea. I think also just making a whole salad and then adding the cottage cheese plus some pepper/salt would be awesome!

Hey Julie!

I love cottage cheese with strawberry jam. I also like it with pureed pumpkin and some nuts mixed in. Delish!

I saw your comment on Healthy Tipping Point asking about wheatgrass– you can buy it in individual packets at Whole Foods. I buy the Amazing Grass brand…they are 99 cents a pop, I think?

Hey girl! I LOVE pumpkin and adding nuts sounds like an excellent idea! Thanks! I definitely want to try the wheatgrass – as weird as it sounds :-) I wouldn’t mind taking a shot every day if it’s good for me. Do you do it daily or more than daily?

Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg December 10, 2009 at 10:21 am

Oh, and I mix it with OJ and pomegranate juice! Not too bad :-)

I love cottage cheese with cucumber and some dill- really yummy and refreshing! I had a problem running yesterday too- maybe freaky wethaer was messing with our systems?

Reply

Julie December 10, 2009 at 11:36 am

Ooo that sounds good! I love dill! I think the weather is messing with our heads. So annoying – it’s going to be a struggle to stay active during the cold months but I’m definitely up for the challenge!

OK I’m a bit late but in case you run out of ideas….

If you can at all actually limit the bananas you have, although they have some protein in them they are higher in sugar and carbs in the glycemic index so it stays in your body longer :(

CC + Pb-mix extra good, for an added treat freeze for a bit-makes it sorbet-ey (plus PB extra protein)

CC+ cinnamon maybe some sugar (DON’T USE substitutes!-honestly biggest change I’ve made-these are horrible for you….don’t you ever wonder why the sugar substitutes aren’t around from years ago and new ones keep coming out!? B/C they kill-literally! They cause more harm then help!)

CC+ sugar free jello

OK and I know you said healthy breakfasts FAST are hard-very true! So some nights i scrambled about 4 eggs and 3 egg whites with veggies as normal and them baggie them up and just dump them in a bowl in the morning and nuke them in the microwave….TA DA!! I’ve got much more…..

I talk to much. sorry.

Oh and Panera….LOVE. Her and Corner bakery..mm mm good!

Hey girl! Thanks for your comment and suggestions! I have been getting splenda and fake sugars out of my diet recently. I’ve basically given them up for a few months now. I feel SO much better about myself. There’s something to be said about eating the REAL thing :-) I’m not sure if I should not have my daily banana. This is the first I’ve heard that it’s bad for me in the mornings. I’d love to hear more though! :-) That’s a good idea about the eggs! Maybe I’ll try it. Thanks so much!!! xoxo

Right on! I’m trying to have the same mentality – more so with food than exercise. I beat myself up more with food. I need to get out of that!

Ok, now I have to go to Panera for lunch! I heart cottage cheese but have only ever put it with sweet things! CC+Peaches is my favorite combo! And tis true about bananas – lots of sugar however the potassium you get from them provides excellent energy for your day!

Julie December 10, 2009 at 11:03 pm

Yum! I need to try with peaches :-) xoxo

Two fire drills? Yikes!

I’m impressed that you went to the gym after napping. If I take a nap, I’m done for the day. Even if you didn’t do your full 30 minutes, you still got up and got moving, so that’s good for something!
