Running is my hot rendezvous

Hi everyone!

As a semi-new-runner, I want to share something I’ve been thinking about for awhile: my new found LOVE for running and how to achieve that love. Trust me, if I can do it anyone can. Growing up, I could barely run around this small field near my elementary school. I didn’t believe in myself. Now, I find myself having chats with Julianne about how frustrated we both are that we can’t run in this horrid winter weather mess!

When I first moved to DC, I became roommates with this girl, M and the first thing I learned about her was she just completed her first triathlon the previous summer. She raved and raved about the athletic task and explained that by using the Couch to 5K program, she was able to complete her running goals.

Immediately, I Googled Couch to 5K and started on my journey running 60-seconds at a time with a 90-second walking break for 20-minutes. I could see my fitness improving after about a week.

Still though, I hadn’t yet experienced the “runners-high” my mother always claimed that existed. Where was it? Was it the same high I felt after normal exercise on, let’s say, the elliptical?

Then, one week it just hit me. My runners high didn’t actually occur on a run but rather at work. I’ll never forget this: I was working retail at the time when all I could think about was my next run. I thought about it like it was some hot rendezvous in a hotel room somewhere. The next day, I knew I was hooked because I wanted to run and it was no longer a chore (at the time, any exercise was a chore).

The reason I’m writing this post is to send a message to new runners. You will, eventually, love it as much as I do and others do. Sticking with it is the goal! I highly recommend the Couch to 5K program (even if you’re fit from other exercise). It starts off so simple and you move up in weeks when you feel ready. Check it out! :-)

There is also a Couch to 5K podcast that takes all the thinking and counting out of the run. Yayyy for running…cannot wait until I get that excited to run.

I love running too, but I’m dying to get off the treadmill! Last night I had the idea to try “hallway running”. Basically, run up and down the long hallways in the house. Ironically, I did so… but it wasn’t like I was able to see where I started and where I finished.

I downloaded a podcast on my Itouch that is called “Podrunner Intervals” it plays music to walk to then alerts you to start running and every week you download a new one as you move up! :) I’ve noticed a difference!

You know, I was a runner in high school, and have slacked off in recent years. I really could use some motivation to get back out there and enjoy the experience. I am going to check out the Couch to 5k!

I tried the Couch to 5K program last year but for some reason didn’t stick with it… :/ This is definitely motivating me to try it again! I’m going to look for the podcast that Brandi mentioned. That would be awesome!
Thanks for the great post! Totally got me pumped!

Can I please have a healed knee already so that I can get into running too?

Heck, I promise I’ll start running if I can get out this brace before the 6week timeline I have left. Boo!

But dang, GOOD FOR YOU! So proud.

I’ve had a few friends that have done Couch to 5K and I do want to try it but I must admit I have never enjoyed running. Maybe once the snow melts I’ll try and this program will change my mind.

Thanks for this post. I’ve been toying with the idea of doing couchto5k, but I REALLLLYYYY hate running..Like I don’t know if I could learn to love it, but hearing your story makes it more believable!

Nope, nope, nope. After seven half-marathons still haven’t had that real runner’s high other than right after finishing a race. That’s it. Even right now I’m sitting here every day thinking do I really have to go out and run again? Maybe it’s because I’ve been running more inside lately. I think part of the runner’s high is the outdoor beauty and enjoying time alone thing too, which never happens for me anymore.
