Whew, I have had one heck of a day.
Today, we had a blood donation unit set up at the school where I work. I’ve given blood a couple times and the last time I gave blood was about 4-years ago. Every time I donated, I would faint in some capacity whether it was just feeling faint and I’d fall down or I’d feel faint in a chair. Since it was so long ago, I decided to donate blood again to see if I would still faint. Plus, it’s for a great cause!
I went through the first part of the process fine. During the donation itself, the only symptom I felt was that my left foot fell asleep. When I was done, I sat down, drank some orange juice and ate some popcorn that was provided. I started chatting with a co-worker and all the sudden, I could feel the faintness coming on. I said loudly, “Okay, I’m starting to feel really faint.” At that point some of the donation workers rushed in an organized sequence and sooner or later I had an ice pack on my head and my neck and a woman was behind me holding my shoulders.
The rest was very scary. I could only see about 30% of what was in front of me and the lady kept saying, “Slow your breathing, move your knees, keep moving!” The episode lasted around 10-15 minutes and I was definitely “on my way out” if I didn’t focus on my breathing and all.
Then they put me back in the reclining chair for about 20-minutes. It took me awhile to get out of that chair without feeling faint again so they brought a wheelchair in to wheel me to the nurses office. Sigh. It was kinda embarrassing but also really funny. After about 20-minutes of lying down and eating peanut butter crackers, I was fine. I came back home and relaxed for awhile. Now, I’m finishing up some delivered pizza because I didn’t think driving tonight was the best option.
I still don’t feel 100% – ugh. I was supposed to run today too which stinks. OH well…
Have you ever fainted while giving blood? Do you still give blood even after fainting?
