Blood donation gone wrong

Hi everyone!

Whew, I have had one heck of a day.

Today, we had a blood donation unit set up at the school where I work. I’ve given blood a couple times and the last time I gave blood was about 4-years ago. Every time I donated, I would faint in some capacity whether it was just feeling faint and I’d fall down or I’d feel faint in a chair. Since it was so long ago, I decided to donate blood again to see if I would still faint. Plus, it’s for a great cause!

I went through the first part of the process fine. During the donation itself, the only symptom I felt was that my left foot fell asleep. When I was done, I sat down, drank some orange juice and ate some popcorn that was provided. I started chatting with a co-worker and all the sudden, I could feel the faintness coming on. I said loudly, “Okay, I’m starting to feel really faint.” At that point some of the donation workers rushed in an organized sequence and sooner or later I had an ice pack on my head and my neck and a woman was behind me holding my shoulders.

The rest was very scary. I could only see about 30% of what was in front of me and the lady kept saying, “Slow your breathing, move your knees, keep moving!” The episode lasted around 10-15 minutes and I was definitely “on my way out” if I didn’t focus on my breathing and all.

Then they put me back in the reclining chair for about 20-minutes. It took me awhile to get out of that chair without feeling faint again so they brought a wheelchair in to wheel me to the nurses office. Sigh. It was kinda embarrassing but also really funny. After about 20-minutes of lying down and eating peanut butter crackers, I was fine. I came back home and relaxed for awhile. Now, I’m finishing up some delivered pizza because I didn’t think driving tonight was the best option.

I still don’t feel 100% – ugh. I was supposed to run today too which stinks. OH well…

Have you ever fainted while giving blood? Do you still give blood even after fainting?

hugs,

Julie

Oy! I did pass out once but still give. I can’t decide whether it’s in my head or an actual problem… Either way, glad you’re feeling better, if not totally!

I’ve had issues giving blood…but most recently was not even allowed to give because of low iron. Now I don’t even try…apparently, I’m anemic and will be turned away anyway. I hope you feel better soon!

I’ve tried to give blood and plasma multiple times and every time my body just gets so anxious that I faint, throw up, and do all sorts of things. I’ve just stopped trying.

I can’t even give blood! Usually my iron is borderline low… and then if I make it past that step, I faint. I’m a wimp!

My mom was in some club of elite donors… like the “50 Gallon” club or something like that. She was a champ.

I? Am a wimp.

I swear the same thing happens to me every time I give blood or need a shot of any kind. In fact, today I need to get immunization shots and I’m dreading going because the last time I did this I woke up to nurses and doctors around me. Still can’t figure if I pysche myself out or it’s an actual medical thing. I’m right there with you sister!
