Bridesmaid dresses, DC, and a fluffy waffle

Hi everyone!

This weekend, I traveled into DC to find bridesmaid dresses for my friend Laura’s wedding. She’s getting married in October and we thought this weekend we would go to David’s Bridal to find some fun dresses.

I decided to take advantage of the weekend and see other people as well. My first stop was Capitol Hill to visit my cousin Jeff. He just moved there (previously from St. Louis) about a month and a half ago. He is basically living the DC dream. He has an awesome apartment, in a sweet part of town.

Hi Jeff!

The best part about Jeff’s apartment was seeing St. Louis everywhere I looked. The best was this Ted Drewes “concrete” souvenir.

We walked around and ended up at Lola’s for a quick bite to eat and a beer. On a whim, I ordered the hummus, which was incredibly garlicky and the spices were just right. The pita bread practically melted in my mouth… mmmm. However, I don’t recommend this if you are with your significant other because, well, the garlic is a lot for a first date… if you know what I mean ;-) Todd was not with me so I could eat all the garlic I wanted! Haha.

Since it was late, Jeff and I only hung out for about an hour before I was off to Arlington to stay with one of my best friends, Jess. Once I arrived, we went grocery shopping for some essentials. While there, she pointed out these cupcakes.

Ick.

I was exhausted. What’s nice about staying at Jess’s house was that it felt like I was coming home. I’ve stayed at her apartment countless times, and it just brought back memories. She’s the best hostess!

On Saturday morning, I met the bride (Laura), Laura’s mother, the other bridesmaids (Sara, far left; Maureen, to my left) for brunch and dress shopping.

We went to La Madeleine and I ordered the Salade Sampler, which was surprisingly filling. The soup and salad was very yummy but I wasn’t a huge fan of the pasta salad. Overall, this meal was very filling. La Madeleine’s has a cafeteria-like style where you serve and seat yourself. It’s a nice experience, but I always come out wishing that they organized themselves better. Sometimes it’s hard to know where to order and what to do, when I think it should be a simpler experience.

Next, we went to David’s Bridal and found some dresses! We saw this dress as soon as we walked in and it was the first dress I tried on. I knew from the minute I tried it on that it was a winner. Laura is a very easy-going bride and wanted us to pick out the same color and material of dress, but if we wanted different styles that was fine. This dress was a favorite of all of us though!

The dresses will be in Horizon Blue. I know people say this about bridesmaid dresses (and never mean it), but I really will wear this again. It looks like something I would find at The Limited and wear all the time.

After we said our goodbyes, I hightailed it to Starbucks to meet my friend Erin for coffee. Our lives have been crazy this past year and catching up was essential. I love her! (Thank you for driving all the way to Alexandria!).

Erin and I only had about an hour because I had a movie to catch! The 6 pm movie of the Hunger Games was priority. Jess bought the tickets last week and we were good to go. We were the first ones in line and able to snag some excellent seats right in the middle.

Here’s my take on the Hunger Games: The movie definitely did the book justice. The book matched my imagination to a tee of what happened in the book. There were a lot of details left out, but what did you expect? It is a movie and it needed to be concise. I highly recommend this movie but if you can, read the book first. I still need to read the second two books – I’ll be working on that this week!

After the movie, Jess, two other friends, and my cousin Jeff had dinner at Ted’s Montana Grill. Ted’s serves bison burgers as well as angus. I was feeling rather simple on Saturday night so I ordered a dual sampler of both the bison and angus burgers with a side of avocado, onion rings, and fries. . I was not disappointed. Everything was flavorful and delicious.

(Random: I love their paper straws).

Later that night, my pal Erin invited me into Chinatown to Rocket Bar. This bad is nostalgic because I’ve been there many times when I lived in DC – I think one time for my birthday? Good times.

“Jeff, help a blogger out and take an awkward picture of me? Thanks.”

I felt so lame that night because I was zonked (zzzzzzz). I only lasted through one drink (thanks, Jeff!) but I was able to hang out for a little bit and see Erin. I’m glad I made the trip!

Once I arrived back in Arlington, I fell straight to sleep. Sunday was destined to be a long (but awesome) day and I needed rest.

Brunch was an excellent end to my weekend. I met Jess, KK, and her new (to me!) girlfriend, S. It was about time I met S! You ever meet someone and just know you were destined to be friends? That’s how I felt about S! KK and S are perfect because their personalities compliment each other beautifully.

We met at First Watch in Fairfax. At first glance, I was immediately impressed. There was about a 10 minute wait, but…

…they provided free coffee while you wait! This is genius. The place is so popular that there’s almost always a wait (according to Yelp reviews) and having coffee readily available makes the wait that much better. Don’t ya think??

The decor was lovely.

Jess ordered the Bacado… tons of avocado in an omelet. So awesome that I stole a picture. Look at all the healthy protein/healthy fat!

I ordered the Tri-fecta. A delcious, airy Belgium waffle. Folks, this was love. It was so light and fluffy… not heavy at all. The eggs and bacon were fantastic as well.

Thank you to everyone who made my weekend awesome! I had such a fun time and can’t wait to go back very soon. <3

About an hour after I returned back to Cleveland, Todd did too. Life is good. <3
