Fun in the Sun at Luau on the Lake

Hello, hello!

Saturday was one of those perfect summer days. The weather was breezy and beautiful, and even though thunderstorms were predicted, they stayed away.

A couple weeks ago, I was contacted to see if I’d be interested in going to the 7th annual Luau on the Lake which benefits Shoes and Clothes for Kids (SC4K; #SC4KLuau12) and blogging about my experience. I was very intrigued because not only does this event benefit a great cause, but it’s also my kind of event: totally chill, outdoors, relaxing, and with a lake in the background.

SC4K is the only non-profit organization in Greater Cleveland providing new shoes and clothes at no charge throughout the year to thousands of children in need. In 2012, they will distribute new clothing and Payless gift cards with a retail value of 2,300,000. That’s a lot of clothing! This organization relies mostly on donors and volunteer support. Luau on the Lake is one of their biggest events! I was really excited to attend!

I was given two VIP tickets and asked Ali if she’d be interested in being my date. The event was held at Wendy Park at Whiskey Island right on Lake Erie. Since I’m terrible at directions and still relatively new to the area, I was concerned about getting lost, but their website was very helpful in providing the directions I needed!

General admission was $40 if purchased before July 11, and VIP was $50.

General admission bought you unlimited beer, wine, and food. VIP scored you early admittance starting at 3:30, 3 cocktail tickets, a Hawaiian lei, tote, and a souvenir cup. I felt that there wasn’t a lot of difference between the general admission and the VIP. But, since it’s for a good cause (and the cocktails were yummy), I’d say the extra $10 is worth getting there early, finding a good seat, and the yummy cocktails (although, I do tend to choose beer and wine over cocktails!).

This was our VIP bag complete with the really cool cups:

I feel that the cost was perfect for this event. You get unlimited food and drink, an awesome DJ, a dance floor, access to raffle prizes, and the beautiful Lake Erie setting. Well worth the $40 general admission price tag.

Throughout the day, they had little bowls of snacks available.

Me and my date, Ali! We had such a blast – this girl is awesome.

There was never a line for beverages and all the bartenders were so nice. You could tell that everyone was having fun working for a good cause!

They had a little photo booth area, complete with props, where they encouraged you to Tweet, Instagram, or Facebook your picture.

So scandalous! ;-)

The best part about Saturday? Meeting up with with Katrina, Suzanne, and Michelle! (Holly, Amanda and Scott came later too!). Katrina and I had been talking about meeting up for ages, and it was about time for it to happen. We just kept missing each other! This was such a fun group of girls (plus Frank who took this picture!).

The party kept going all afternoon!

I spy La Croix! Yes, I had to take a picture of my beloved sparkling water. I think the bartender thought I was crazy for taking a picture. Haha!

Free wine toppers from Barefoot Wine!

From 5:30 – 7:30 they served dinner. The line was very long, but it went pretty fast! This picture was taken towards the end. The food was great too – my favorite was the chicken and the lovely salad they served (go nutrition!).

Hi Amanda and Scott!

Chillin’

Hi Holly!

At 6, they had a limbo contest. Not gonna lie, I was thiiiiiiiis close to doing it. :-) Maybe next year!

They also had raffle tickets available throughout the event. You could buy 1 ticket for $5 or 3 tickets for $10. Ali and I bought $20 worth of tickets (with the intention of sharing a basket if we won). Frank got lucky and won the sweet Great Lakes basket! Party at his house! ;-)

While, I loved the raffle tickets and the baskets they had available, I didn’t like that the winner had to be present, because they pulled the winners at 7:45. Ali and I arrived at 3:45 that day and didn’t realize until after we bought the tickets that they wouldn’t be drawn until much later. Since the event was so much fun, it wasn’t a huge deal for us to stick around, but we originally wanted to leave by 7 since we both had other events to attend that evening. If they want people present, maybe draw the tickets earlier… around 7, perhaps? Or contact the winners later. This is my only suggestion for next year’s event.

All in all, the 2012 Luau on the Lake was a FUN event. I highly, highly recommend this event for anyone who wants to have a good time in an easy-going atmosphere. The best part is that you are raising money for a good cause.

{I was given two VIP passes to attend this year’s Luau on the Lake and all my opinions are my own. I was contacted by Rachel, a board member for SC4K to blog about the event. Rachel was so easy to work with and when I met her in person, she was so sweet and clearly passionate about SC4K! Thank you, Rachel and SC4K for this amazing opportunity.}

After Luau on the Lake, I was off to Jen‘s house for a fun BBQ with TONS of food! They even had a fire going out back… which, if you know me, I love campfires!

Me, Sarah, and Crystal:

Me, Kimberly, Jen, Tammy, Alicia, and Amanda:

It was a super fun day that transitioned into a relaxing evening. The whole day was filled with tons of laughs and good friends. I’m so excited for the week ahead!
