My Day On the Neah Bay

Hi guys!

I am so glad you had a good laugh over my April Fool’s joke. I must admit, every year I longingly stare at other blogs and websites who do fun April Fools Day jokes and thought I would join! Oh and if you are interested, I adore my leopard print snuggie. It’s especially awesome during long car trips when you want to snuggle up in the passenger seat. I highly recommend their cozy goodness.

Anyyyyways, I owe you a post! A couple weeks ago, Todd invited me out to go underway with the Coast Guard in Lake Erie. He is currently an MK3 in the Coast Guard and I absolutely jumped at the chance to go with them for a few hours! Occasionally, they will have days when they can bring visitors and super awesome girlfriends on the boat.

Todd is stationed at the Coast Guard Cutter Neah Bay which is ported in Cleveland, Ohio. The Neah Bay is a 140 feet boat and its primary duty is ice breaking. I have always thought that Todd’s job is pretty awesome and this day just solidified that belief.

I have visited Todd on the boat several times before, but it was never moving. I always wondered what it was like when they actually went somewhere. I was a tad nervous about sea sickness, considering the weather wasn’t perfect and I clearly don’t have a lot of experience on boats like this.

Once I boarded, I was quickly offered some coffee in their fancy mugs. They clearly know how to make their guests feel welcome first thing in the morning!

Next, we went over some safety tips. I honestly didn’t pay too much attention because I was so excited to get going! The coffee contributed to my excitement for sure. I probably should have paid more attention just in case we hit an iceberg.

Todd had to go work, so I hung out upstairs in the “bridge” area. It’s basically where they steer and look out for icebergs. {Side-note: I am kinda obsessed with The Titanic, in case you can’t tell.}

Bye, Cleveland! We were off! The bottom left hat on the boat is Todd. I was totally spying on him as he worked.

I loved seeing Cleveland from the lake!

There was a film crew on board for some weather-related filming and they wanted to get a good shot of the light house so we passed it several times.

Next, Todd showed me the engine room {where he works}. Going down that little hole was kinda scary but also really fun. Hi Todd! {He clearly loves when I take pictures of everything… ha}

The engine room! It was loouudd! Thank goodness for super strong headphones.

After a tour of the engine room {where I could barely hear a word Todd said}, I went back up to the bridge and caught some waves. At first, I felt a tad sick but it passed quickly. Todd gave me a tip for when you get sea sick: Stare out to the horizon or at something stable {like the moon} and it will help your body stabilize. It definitely worked for me.

Even though we were out for a couple hours, I felt like I blinked and we were back in port. I had a really good time! I was so happy for the opportunity to see the boat actually move ;-) I loved hanging out with Todd in his element. {Major bonus that he is cute in his uniform}.

Have a great day!

Have either of you toured the USS Cod? It’s open in the summer. While it’s a submarine it would be a fun comparison technology-wise to what is on Todd’s ship today. I toured it last summer with some friends and it was really cool!

Pretty cool day! I always get seasick so I take lots of dramamine and that makes me sleepy so I’m a little out of it when I am on a boat.
I’m a day late to reading blog posts but sounds like you had a pretty good April Fools joke!

That’s so cool that they let outsiders on the boat while they are out on the water. I’m really bad with motion sickness so I usually have to stay above where I can always look at the horizon.

Gross true story: Many years ago I went on a boat cruise for an end of the summer work party. It was windy and wavy and I totally barfed over the side. Unfortunately it caught some air and hit some coworkers downwind. Luckily it was a co-op and I only worked with them for a few more weeks.

I’m sooooo jealous that Todd is stationed on Lake Erie. What Nathan & I wouldn’t give to be there instead of here…
