Luau on the Lake 2013 GIVEAWAY!

What are your basic needs?

Like most people, my basic needs are clothes, food, water, and shelter. Sometimes, when I think about my mediocre problems and obstacles that I face in my life, I remind myself how lucky I am.

As a child, I never had to worry about finding the proper shoes to wear on one of those winter days when we trotted through the snow to get to school. Since I had snow boots, I was able to play, socialize, and have fun on those winter days. I didn’t have to worry about my feet becoming frost bitten. Instead, I could learn socialization, how to have fun, and focus on my academics once I did arrive to school. What if I didn’t have those snow boots? What if I had torn up shoes, with holes, no shoe laces, and the incorrect size? Would I be able to focus on the joy of walking to school? I doubt it.

Unfortunately, this is the type of situation that many of our children in Cuyahoga County in Ohio face. Did you know that 44% of children in Cuyahoga County live at 100% poverty level {source}?

As a school psychologist, I see first hand the trauma that these students face if they do not have their basic needs met. Their academic abilities decrease, as well as their self-confidence, social interactions, and love for school. This makes perfect sense because why would a child want to finish a math assignment when they are more worried about meeting their basic needs of having adequate clothing and shoes?

Luckily, we have an organization called Shoes and Clothes for Kids {SC4K} which provides new shoes and clothes to income eligible children throughout Cuyahoga County. They are the only non-profit in this area that provides this type of service. A service that I am thankful for.

Last year, I attended Luau on the Lake and had a BLAST. It was quite honestly one of my favorite days and I’m thrilled to be going back this year.

I had so much fun with you last year, I would LOVE to win again. My fave summer cocktail is sangria though the Shoreway Cooler at Market Garden is a close second.

My favorite summertime drink is a frozen margarita, or an icy cold beer, or choosing one is too hard that’s why it’s a good thing there are a few weekends in the summer to let me dedicate a day for each favorite!
