Florida, Part 4: Saying Yes

Todd’s uncle has a few condos/apartments on Siesta Key Beach, Florida. Last year, when we were visiting, he showed us a really nice apartment that directly overlooks the beach. I remember whispering to Todd that I hoped we could someday stay there because the view was so spectacular.

On Sunday, June 30, Todd and I packed up to drive to Siesta Key. I knew we were staying in one of his uncle’s places, and assumed we were staying in the same place as last year, which was really nice. Todd just responded by telling me that he had a surprise for me.

When we arrived at the beach, his uncle was there to greet us and immediately took us upstairs to the really nice apartment overlooking the beach that we toured last year. I was in heaven and very surprised! The apartment is gorgeous and I figured that was the end of Todd’s surprises for the day.

We decided on sushi at Jo To that night and had a really good meal, complete with saki for two. We both love sushi and this was a perfect way to begin our Siesta Key trip.

We got back to the apartment around 7:45 and Todd wanted to go for a sunset walk. Sunset was at 8:29 and we left around 8 pm. I took this picture on Instagram right before we left.

Our walk was very normal. Walking is our thing – we love walking in the evenings and having a beautiful sunset beach just fed our ritual.

Looking back, I’m really happy I brought my iPhone to take some random pictures. I was very Instagram happy and knew I would want to post these later.

About 20 minutes into our walk down the beach, we turned around and headed back to the apartment. There were a lot of people along the beach, trying to capture a good picture of the sunset. Right when the sun was about to set, a lot of clouds shielded the glory. Photographers and families were visibly disappointed by the lack of perfect, but Todd and I didn’t care. We knew we could come back the following day for another chance on the sunset.

When we were about half-way back to the apartment, my left hand in Todd’s right hand, he started rubbing my left ring finger. At first, I didn’t mind, but then I kept looking at him and was like, “Um… what are you doing?” He would stop and then start again. He kept doing this, randomly, until we were pretty close to the apartment. I looked at him again and asked, “Why do you keep doing that?”

Todd said, “Soon, I won’t be able to rub my finger there easily.” All the sudden, I look to my left and Todd is down on one knee holding out a beautiful white gold, pear shaped ring.

At this point in the story, I want to type out exactly what Todd said and how I romantically accepted his proposal and there were unicorns and butterflies on the beach in response to our major turning point, but that’s not what happened.

I do not remember what he said. All I remember is tearing up and exclaiming, “Is this thing for real?!”

“Are you sure?”

“Is that ring real?”

“No really, are you serious?!”

Yep. Apparently, that is how I respond to someone asking me to marry them. :-) After what Todd describes as an extra long time on his knee, he interrupted me and said, “Julie! Yes or No?”

“OMG YES!”

And finally, he put the gorgeous ring on my finger and I was balling my eyes out and hugging and kissing him. Once the initial shock was over, I realized what time it was: 8:45 pm. I had to call my mom before she went to sleep. From the beach, I called her and told her the fantastic news. Then, we washed off our sandy feet and went inside to call everyone.

We opened champagne and proceeded to have the best family and friend conversations ever. Besides committing to spend the rest of my life with my best friend, having these conversations are probably the best part about getting engaged.

Surrounding the setting that Todd picked out is my grandmother‘s diamond. Every time I look at it, I think of love. Love for Todd and the love my grandparents had for each other all the way to the end. Their relationship was the type of true love you can only hope for and one that I have found.

LOVE your engagement story! Also, for some (really weird) reason, my first thought when Matt proposed was also “is this a real ring? or maybe it’s a fake? or a toy?” Which makes NO SENSE AT ALL. Glad I’m not the only one. :)
