Switching from coffee to tea

Earlier in the year, I was getting sick of coffee. I didn’t like adding cream, unnecessary sugar, and just drinking coffee all together. Sometimes I liked it, but I never really felt awesome afterward. The caffeine boost was really the only thing that kept me drinking. So, I decided to switch to tea in the mornings.

Funny, I thought it would be extremely difficult to switch from coffee to earl grey tea every morning. At first, it kind of was. In the morning, I would crave the kick that a ton of caffeine gave me. However, I drank my tea anyways and went along with my day. Then, after lunch, was when I really needed the caffeine so I’d have a small dixie cup of coffee. Soon, my coffee cravings stopped.

You see, I didn’t really think about it too much. I just did it and gave my body what it needed. Now, I drink earl grey in the morning and that’s it. No more coffee. If I want something “extra” in the afternoon, I reach for green tea or another kind of black tea.

Does this mean that coffee is completely out of my life? Absolutely not. If I’m visiting a friend and all they have is coffee, I will have some. Same thing goes with picking up a latte. If I want one, I’ll have it. I’m just not making it my daily routine anymore.

The benefits so far?

- I’m not drinking as much caffeine as I was before. Earl gray tea has about half the caffeine as coffee does. Instead of getting that insane boost of energy, instead I get a small, “time to start the day” boost. Nothing crazy and it’s calming.

- I’m not drinking sugar or extra calories. Normally, I’d put in some fat/low free vanilla milk, splenda, or skim milk in my coffee. Now, I just have my tea with nothing else. I know some people put honey in their tea but I don’t see the need to.

- My body feels better. I don’t feel weighed down my coffee anymore. It was overpowering in the morning. My tea just makes me relaxed, more comfortable, and focused.

- I know there are other benefits too. There are always debates about which is better, coffee or tea? I think both are good for you but in different ways. It all depends on what your body needs.

If you want to switch from coffee tea, I recommend it! It can be done :-) Consider starting with a black tea (like earl grey) because it has the most caffeine. To me, earl grey is the closest to coffee because it has a similar bitter taste. If you want something sweeter, check out the variety of fruity teas on the market. Also, make sure your tea is fresh! It expires so don’t use whatever year-old stuff you have in your kitchen. When you brew your tea, leave the bag in for about 3-minutes or less depending on what you like. Don’t squeeze the bag when it comes out. Just throw it away.

Let me know if you switch over!

xx,

Julie

P.S. Special thanks to Dan for giving me tons of tea advice :-)

I know what you mean about making a caffeine switch. I was never a coffee drinker, but I was a huge Diet Coke drinker. I definitely felt dependent on it and had that “weighed down” feeling! I agree that making the switch to less caffeine can be done and it’s not the horrible ordeal that people make it out to be :-) Glad you found something you like!

this is so funny because i’m the exact opposite. i just started drinking coffee in the past 3-4 months. before that – never! :) i dont get a ‘weighed down’ feeling though – maybe that will come after a lot of coffee drinking?

I actually hate the taste of coffee but I am quite fond of green tea now that Big Man introduced me to it! :)

I LOVE tea. Hot or Cold. I do like my teas to be sweet unless they are fruit teas like Tazo. I hardly drink coffee. Once in a while a nice iced french vanilla but I totaly prefer tea to coffee!!

I love tea but the problem is that I looad mine with sugar and milk, which basically negates all its good properties.

Oh well… but I was never a coffee drinker to begin with, FYI.

This is very timely, as my doctor just told me to cut back on my caffeine intake (four cups of coffee a day = bad). I’d like to not have more than two cups a day, but I have two cups before I get to work… then another two cups when I get there… and then I’m wired.

I started downing a lot more coffee recently than I used to – just have been a lot more tired I guess!! So far I’m not feeling to “blah” with it, but who knows, it could be coming ;) I’ve never been a huge tea fan, it makes me feel like I’m sick (since I tend to only drink it when I am sick!) but I am proud of you regardless! You’re taking many steps to improve your life missy and you’re doing awesome! If I ever decide to go the tea route, I will be sure to let you know!! ;)

I drink coffee almost every weekday morning, but I take a voluntary break from it every couple of months. I don’t like the idea of being addicted to anything.

Plus, I love me some Peach Ginger tea!

yay! i’m so proud of you.. i just recently made this switch, too because i just couldn’t do the overload of caffeine anymore. i was needing it to get through my day but because i went from drinking NO coffee to 3 cups a day, my muscles reacted really bad and i was getting crazy spasms.. not fun! i’m not a big tea drinker so i switched over to this drink called “cranergy” .. it’s cranberry juice but it’s infused with green tea, so you get a natural boost without slamming your body with a blast of caffeine.. totally that “ready to start the day” feeling you talked about. give it a whirl – you can get 4 packs at target.

keep it up, love!
xoxo

I go back and forth depending on my mood that day. But I am really happy I started drinking tea and not so much coffee. You’re right you do feel better

I looove my Teavana teapot and loose tea. A little investment, but something about making your own tea is sooo much fun.
