So fortunate

You know what’s strange? Looking back and seeing how far you’ve come.

This time last year, I was still on holiday break from school, working on a comprehensive exam, and soon, I would lose one of the greatest men I’ve ever known.

Since a year has past, I have grown up so much. I take better care of myself, I push out negative thoughts, and I strive to be a better person everyday.

It makes me wonder, where will I be on January 14, 2011? 2011. I hope to have a job, be living with Dan, continuing on my running journey, and loving my life.

But, what if something happens that shatters me? Will I recover?

I’ve been so fortunate in this life of mine that it’s hard not to take things for granted. I mean, come on, I have a warm bed to go to tonight. I have FOOD on my table and so much water that I never have to worry about it going away. Why worry about petty little things?

Ever since I received the news from Haiti, I’ve really been thinking about these things.

Yesterday, I texted “Haiti” to 90999 to donate $10 to the Red Cross.

It’s so easy and only $10. What is $10 to me normally? To me, it’s not going out to dinner this week. Or not picking up a new scarf.

Another thing I’m working on is something called “Dress Down for Haiti.” Basically, at the place of your employment, you have a “dress-down” day where employees dress in jeans or something that’s not normally permitted. The employees that participate donate at least $1 or $2. Then, all that money is donated to the Red Cross or another Haiti-connected charity.

Great, huh?

Speaking of which, I gotta go meet with my principal about that. I’m very excited!

This weekend, Dan is visiting! I’m SO excited :-) Tonight we are doing a wine and cheese night together while we watch Scrubs reruns. Can it get any better?

xoxo,

Julie

What a great post. I often, too, wonder what lies in store for my future. Yesterday, I gave $10 to Compassion for their efforts in Haiti.

Have a wonderful weekend with Dan! Wine, cheese, Scrubs and Dan sound like a great combination!! :)

In 2008 I nearly lost my dad; he had a minor heart attack and they found that he needed a quadruple bypass. (You know that episode of GA where George’s dad comes in and then dies… and then George, before hand, breaks down crying and says “But he’s my dad!”…. I lost it and it’s hard to watch that scene for me).

I became the family patriarch, if you will. My mom was with my dad all the time, so I stepped up and took care of EVERYTHING – bills, household maintenance, banking, grocery shopping, etc. Before that I thought I was pretty grown up, but in May 2008 I found out that I didn’t and that was when I realized that I grew up right at that point.

What I’m tryin to say is, if something shatters you… you will recover. You just have to look at it as a growth period. It may feel like your heart has stopped and your world isn’t the same, but you will definitely come over.

You seem like a very strong person who faces things head on. You’ll get through anything, I’m sure of it.

I love the “Dress Down for Haiti” idea. Unfortunately, my office already pretty un-dressy, but this is a great idea!

We are all SO fortunate, aren’t we? I realized the $10 donation was something super easy to do as well – I probably spend that much in a couple days on soda alone (so bad!). So glad you get to have Dan visit you this upcoming weekend, enjoy your week!!
